On the Holy Spirit
by Basil the Great
Included Formats
Written in the fourth century amid fierce controversy over the divinity of the Holy Spirit, On the Holy Spirit is Basil the Great's great defense of the Spirit's place in the life and worship of the Church. With careful argument, biblical depth, and pastoral restraint, Basil shows that the Spirit is not a creature or lesser power, but is glorified together with the Father and the Son, giving life, sanctifying the faithful, and bringing creation into communion with God. Against those who would diminish the Spirit, Basil appeals to Scripture, baptism, doxology, and the Church's received pattern of prayer. He argues not from novelty but from the faith already prayed and confessed by Christians: the Spirit is known by his works, honored in worship, and inseparable from the Father and the Son in the gift of salvation.
